Looking for Museum Mile in Chicago? Plan a Museum Campus Walk
Museum Mile is in New York. For Chicago, connect the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium with a walk and a CTA return plan.

Museum Mile refers to the museum-lined stretch of Fifth Avenue in New York, from 82nd to 110th streets. If you are planning a Chicago visit, the lakefront cluster to look for is Museum Campus, home to the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. These are different destinations, not interchangeable names. (Museum Mile description, Chicago Museum Campus)
For an efficient Chicago day, visit one institution properly, walk past the other two, and finish with the skyline outside Adler. Their proximity makes them easy to connect—not necessarily easy to tour fully in one day.
The route: Roosevelt → Field → Shedd → Adler
Planning allowance: budget about an hour for the outdoor walk from Roosevelt station through these stops, plus photo stops, meals and museum time. This is a planning estimate; walking inside the museums is additional.
The opening hours below reflect published schedules as of October 11, 2026. Check your visit date before booking.
1. Start at Roosevelt station
Roosevelt serves the CTA Red, Orange and Green lines. Walk east along Roosevelt Road just past Michigan Avenue, then follow the park path to the 11th Street Pedestrian Bridge over the rail tracks. Continue through the underpasses beneath Columbus Drive and DuSable Lake Shore Drive, following Museum Campus signs toward the Field Museum. This follows the park approach in the Field Museum’s directions.
If you want to save your walking energy for the campus, connect to a #146 bus toward Museum Campus at State and Roosevelt instead. Check its destination: Shedd warns that a #146 ending at Harrison/State will not take you to the aquarium. (Shedd transit guidance)
2. Make the Field Museum your first stop
The Field is the natural-history and cultural-discovery choice, particularly if dinosaurs are the priority. Set aside about three hours as a planning allowance rather than treating it as a quick stop. Its published regular hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m., excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. (Field visitor information)
If Shedd or Adler is your main interest, keep the Field as an exterior stop and continue east. You do not need to buy three admissions to enjoy the connected route.
3. Continue to Shedd Aquarium
Follow the campus paths toward Shedd, northeast of the Field. If you are visiting inside, approach its entrance from the half-circle drive on the south side, rather than assuming the historic front steps are the entry route. (Shedd directions and entrance information)
Choose Shedd as your main indoor visit if aquatic animals are the reason for the day. Advance reservations are highly recommended, and hours vary by date. Book this stop first, then fit the exterior walk around your reservation. (Shedd tickets and reservations)
4. Walk east along Solidarity Drive to Adler
Continue along the sidewalk beside Solidarity Drive toward Adler. Finish outside the planetarium for views back toward downtown across the lakefront; Choose Chicago highlights the skyline views here.
For an indoor Adler visit, check both opening hours and show times before choosing this sequence. Wednesday’s published hours are 4–10 p.m., unlike its daytime schedule on other days. If an early show is your priority, reverse the route and start at Adler. (Adler visit planning)
Return without retracing the whole walk
Under normal service, board the #146 at Museum Campus/Adler Planetarium northbound toward Berwyn for the return toward downtown. For a rail connection, get off at State and Roosevelt and transfer to the Red, Orange or Green line that serves your next destination. (CTA #146 service, Roosevelt connection)
Check CTA alerts before relying on that return. As of October 11, 2026, the #146 page lists planned reroutes and a special Museum Campus shuttle between the campus and Roosevelt station. Check which alerts apply to your travel time, especially around major events. The #130 Museum Campus bus is seasonal, so do not build an October return around it. (CTA service alerts, Adler transportation guidance)
Want art museums rather than science?
Choose an Art Institute–centered day instead of treating it as another Museum Campus stop. Its Michigan Avenue entrance is at 111 South Michigan Avenue, farther north in the downtown park corridor. It is closed Tuesdays under its published regular schedule. (Art Institute directions, hours)
For a short trip, give either the Art Institute or a Museum Campus institution the main museum slot in your 36-hour Chicago plan, rather than squeezing several large collections between lakefront walks.
