What the Jackson Park Garage Charges, and When Transit Wins

The on-campus garage at the Obama Presidential Center charges $22 for a stay of up to four hours, $34 for anything longer, and $15 if you enter after 5 p.m. A Museum or Forum ticket validated at coat check brings a stay over four hours back down to $22. Special events run $50 or more. The garage is ticketless and cash-free, takes payment only through the Metropolis app, and the Foundation does not guarantee a space. A visitor who cannot absorb a full garage should plan on the Metra Electric or a CTA bus before leaving home, not after circling Stony Island.

Those figures come from the Obama Foundation’s directions and parking page. Rates and arrangements can change, so re-check that page shortly before a visit, especially for a scheduled event.

Enter your arrival time, visit length and whether you will validate; the garage total and transit alternatives update beside the controls.

Daytime entry, 2 hours. Up to four hours is $22; validation would not lower it.

Garage Rates by Visit Length and Entry Time

Parking situation Charge Condition
Up to four hours $22 Standard daytime rate
More than four hours $34 No qualifying validation
More than four hours, validated $22 Museum or Forum ticket validated at coat check
Entry after 5 p.m. $15 Published evening rate
Special event $50 or more Varies by event

The evening listing does not say how long the $15 rate lasts or whether it can be combined with validation. Treat it as the price for a visit that starts after 5 p.m. and ends before the garage closes, and confirm anything more elaborate with the Center.

Three worked examples cover most daytime visits. A three-hour visit is $22. A five-hour visit without validation is $34. A five-hour Museum or Forum visit with coat-check validation is $22.

Validation Only Helps a Stay Over Four Hours

Validation only changes the charge for a qualifying visit that exceeds four hours. It does not reduce a shorter visit below the standard $22, so a two-hour Museum visit pays $22 whether or not the ticket is stamped.

Validation and payment are separate steps. If a Museum or Forum visit will run past four hours, take the ticket to coat check and ask for validation there. Holding an admission ticket does not apply the lower rate on its own; the garage system only sees the validation.

Payment Is App-Only Through Metropolis

The garage is ticketless and does not accept cash. It runs on the Metropolis: Remarkable Parking app, and every vehicle must be paid for before it exits.

The official guidance names no cash lane, attendant or other method for visitors without a compatible smartphone. Anyone in that position should contact the Center before traveling rather than arrive with cash and expect someone to take it.

Where the Garage Is and When It Closes

The campus address is 6001 S. Stony Island Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60637. The garage entrance is off Stony Island Avenue near 61st Street, between the Forum and Home Court.

The garage operates daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Retrieve the car inside those hours; the schedule is not permission for overnight parking or 24-hour access.

Capacity is limited, particularly at peak times. The Foundation’s visitor FAQ says availability may be constrained when the campus is busy, and there is no published overflow lot.

Vehicle limits, as detailed in CBS Chicago’s opening visitor guide:

Limit Rule
Maximum clearance 8 feet 2 inches
Oversized vehicles and RVs Not permitted
Motorcycles Permitted, no dedicated spaces

Drivers of tall vans or anything with roof-mounted equipment should measure total height before leaving.

Accessible Spaces and EV Charging Cost the Same

Accessible parking is inside the on-campus garage at the standard rates; it is not complimentary. Because those spaces sit within a garage with limited overall capacity, availability should not be assumed.

The garage has nine EV charging stations, first come, first served, according to the Foundation’s visitor FAQ. Charging availability is not reservable.

When Metra or CTA Beats Driving

The closest rail stop is the Metra Electric Line’s University of Chicago/59th Street station, about a three-minute walk from the Museum. CTA bus routes 6, 10, 15 and 28 stop directly at the campus, per the Foundation’s directions guidance. Metra and CTA fares are not listed in the Foundation’s parking material, so budget them from the transit agencies’ own fare pages.

Transit wins in four cases: the visit falls on a peak day when the garage may fill, a special event pushes parking to $50 or more, your group cannot use a smartphone-only payment app, or the vehicle exceeds the 8-foot-2-inch clearance. The garage wins when a group needs the car on site and the applicable rate fits the day.

Pick one plan before departure. The available information does not identify a verified nearby place to leave a car and switch to transit if the garage is full, so arriving by car and improvising is the riskiest option.

Admission is separate from parking. WTTW reported that initial Museum admission sold out shortly after the Center opened and that a further September-through-January release was announced. That report says nothing about parking prices or garage occupancy, so verify tickets and parking as two separate checks.

For the simplest budget: $22 for a normal daytime visit, coat-check validation when a Museum or Forum visit will run past four hours, or the $15 rate for entry after 5 p.m. When garage uncertainty matters more than the convenience of a car, the 59th Street Metra stop and the four CTA routes are the cleaner choice.
